Research Interest
Genetic improvement of industrially important plants for targeted agronomic traits. To understand the genetic mechanism of quantitatively inherited traits through various advance tools and techniques such as linkage/QTL mapping, genome wide association studies, marker analysis, phylogenetic studies etc.
Research Summary
Germplasm resources of linseed (Linum usitatissimum) and grain amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus) have been phenotypically characterized and potential accessions are being utilized in various breeding programs. Traits- specific bi-parental mapping populations (Recombinant Inbred Lines) developed for linseed and phenotypically evaluated. Core accessions have been determined based on phenotypic data in linseed and grain amaranth for genome wide association studies. To create induced variability, EMS-mediated mutagenesis has been attempted in linseed and a large population of mutant lines developed.
The genomic resources consist of a large set of molecular markers (SSR, SNPs) developed in linseed. SSR-based linkage/QTL map of linseed have been developed and QTLs for Alternaria blight resistance identified. The SNP markers-based genetic diversity and association studies have also been carried out, revealing several potential QTLs associated with important agronomic traits. Resequencing of core accessions of linseed and grain amaranth have been carried and large scale high quality SNPs generated.
