Transcription regulation,epigenetics and genomics

Research

Research Summary

My group contributed to understanding plant transcription regulation by developing several novel artificial synthetic promoters and regulated expression systems to express transgenes in plants. Our efforts led to developing the first-ever artificial synthetic plant promoter based on computational analysis of plant genes and promoters. Several international and national patents were awarded for this research. My group also developed an entirely novel reversible male sterility system by controlling the expression of the Beclin1 gene in the tapetum of the model plant tobacco. Our group actively deploys this novel reversible male sterility system in cotton for F1-hybrid production. Our group has contributed remarkably well to cotton genomics by developing several SSRs and SNP markers. Our group's contribution to SNP discovery leads to an entirely indigenous 50K cotton SNP chip. Our group also participated in an international consortium that developed 63K cotton SNP. These cotton SNP chips are presently used nationally and internationally for molecular-assisted breeding programs. Our group have contributed immensely to understanding genetic and epigenetic regulation of cotton fiber development and drought tolerance in cotton. Our research on plant epigenetics have led to identifying a novel growth-promoting molecule, Anacardic acids, which improves cotton yield, and was awarded a patent. The product is now under commercial product development.
